At the end of each school year, Superintendent Bryant announces the recipient of his annual Pulling for Kids Award - one of, if not the, highest honors available to any Lubbock-Cooper employee! This year's Pulling for Kids Award honored a group of individuals, Lubbock-Cooper's Communities in Schools Site Coordinators! Through Communities in Schools (CIS), our Site Coordinators partner with the district to "fill the gap" between school and home. They provide students in need and their families with a variety of support: groceries, facilitating medical care, washing clothing, coordinating transportation, purchasing formal attire for big events, taking students for haircuts, helping students obtain driver's licenses, coordinating the fulfillment of Christmas wish lists, and so much more. They step in to meet the needs of students and families in crisis - needs that MUST be met before any learning could occur - and help them conquer obstacles they face outside of the classroom so students are equipped to learn and accomplish their future goals! Since LCISD's partnership with CIS began in 2015, 4,034 LCISD students have been case-managed by CIS, and their representatives have provided 93,783 service hours to our students. In the past year alone, case-managed students have shown a 71% improvement in attendance, a 93% improvement in academics, and a 95% improvement in behavior, as reported by TEA. Out of these students, 55% are eligible for free or reduced lunch, 34.7% are experiencing family conflict or crisis, and 2.3% have an incarcerated parent or guardian. This year, these students have received assistance with mental and behavioral health, medical services, academic support, family engagement, college and career readiness, and other enrichment. Of the students served by CIS in the greater Lubbock area in the past year, 99% were promoted to the next grade level, 100% stayed in school, and 100% of those eligible to graduate did so. Congratulations to our incredible CIS Site Coordinators - Lisa Ramirez, Angela Davis, Debi Nicchio, Gina Garcia, Charnese Perez, Vanessa Arguello, Desiree Perea, and Sydney McDonald - and THANK YOU for all you do for the LCP family!

The Lubbock-Cooper Pirate Baseball team opens a new chapter as Chris Baker steps into the role of head coach, following Coach Brad Wuensche’s transition to LCISD's secondary athletics coordinator! Both coaches have shown exemplary dedication to the program and a leadership style reflective of the rich history of the LCISD Athletics Department. Coach Wuensche’s personal accolades include being named District Coach of the Year in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, Hub City Preps Baseball Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2023, and Lone Star Varsity Coach of the Year in 2023. However, he would much prefer to share the accomplishments of the team as a whole, including District Championships in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, a Regional Quarterfinals appearance in 2021, Regional Semifinals appearances in 2018, 2022, and 2024, and a Regional Finals appearance in 2023. Coach Baker has served as the Pirates’ pitching coach for the past five years, significantly contributing to many of those achievements and the success of the distinguished Pirate Baseball program. Expressing his excitement for the future, Baker shared, "I am honored to be named the next head Pirate Baseball coach. It’s a special thing to be part of the LCP Family, and I am excited to serve in a new capacity and uphold the strong traditions and values set by Coach Wuensche and other program leaders." In his new role, Coach Wuensche looks forward to continuing his service to LCISD athletics. “For 18 years, the Lubbock-Cooper Pirate Baseball program has made such a positive impact on my life,” said Wuensche. “More recently, this program, the players, and their families have created memories my own kids will never forget. The value of our LCP programs is immeasurable when you see influences like that unfold. My family and I have been blessed to be a part of the LCP Family, and I am excited for the opportunity to continue to play a part in maintaining the culture that has been created within this district and its athletic programs.” Congratulations to Coach Chris Baker and Coach Brad Wuensche on their new roles! Their leadership embodies the spirit of the LCP family, and we look forward to their continued contributions to the district’s athletic success!
