Homeless Services:

The federal McKinney-Vento Act and Texas state law guarantee that you can enroll in school if you live:

in a shelter (family shelter, domestic violence shelter, youth shelter or transitional living program)
in a motel, hotel, or weekly-rate housing
in a house or apartment with more than one family because of economic hardship or loss
in an abandoned building, a car, at a campground, or on the street
in temporary foster care or with an adult who is not your parent or legal guardian
in substandard housing (no electricity, no water, and/or no heat)
with friends or family because you are a runaway or unaccompanied youth

To put these federal regulations into common terms: if you or your family has moved in with family, friends, or someone else; you or your family has moved into a shelter (normally in Lubbock); and/or you or your family are living in a place that is sub-standard (examples are RV, mobile home, apartment, or house that is very run down, or some other location that is not intended for long term living) you qualify to be on this program and be enrolled into the school district of your choice.

Homeless Education Program

This act guarantees homeless children and youth the following:

The right to immediate enrollment in school, even if lacking paperwork normally required for enrollment.

The right exists to attend school in his/her school of origin (if this is requested by the parent and is feasible) or in the school in the attendance area where the family or youth is currently residing.

The right to receive transportation to his/her school origin, if this is requested by the parent and is feasible.

The right to services comparable to those received by housed schoolmates, including transportation and supplemental educational services.

The right to attend school along with children is not experiencing homelessness. Segregation based on a student’s status as homeless is strictly prohibited.

The posting of homeless students’ rights appears in all schools and other places around the community.
